Nothing beats the smell of melted plastic in the morning right?
Even though we install and maintain alarm systems doesn’t mean we’re exempt from issues. After finding that we couldn’t remotely unlock out office door we wondered if we had a lock failure or even loss of power.
A quick check of our cameras told us we had power as well as network communications so why the loss of lock function?
After having to use the alternative route to release the door because installing the keypad that’s been sitting in the box is is too much like hard work apparently (cobblers shoes spring to mind here) we managed to gain access.
A quick look at the alarm panel and the lack of display told us we had a power supply issue somewhere, at this point normally I would assume a tripped breaker or fuse failed somewhere but I was wrong.
Upon opening the casing I was prompted with the lovely sight pictured, a lovely melted casing that houses the power supply unit. A slight nightmare on a Saturday morning as I don’t carry spares for these.
After some jerry-rigging a backup 12v CCTV power supply to get the system online I can honestly say I haven’t actually fitted the replacement yet. As for the faulty board it’s currently sat to the side of my desk inside a small tray with all the screws because naturally I’ll diagnose the fault one day. We’re only human right!
Of course if you have a fault it would be rectified much faster. Customers installations always take priority over our own jobs.
